Toyota Motor North America, American Honda, Nissan Group and Mazda have reported U.S. sales results for the third quarter of 2026. The reports show growth at Toyota, Honda and Nissan on a total volume basis and a small year over year decline at Mazda.

Toyota reported that electrified vehicles represented 57.4% of its quarterly volume, while Honda reported a quarterly record of over 106,000 hybrid sales. Nissan reported total and retail sales measures, and Mazda quarterly totals were calculated from monthly reports.

The available company reports do not provide complete totals for all Japanese automakers. A comparable Subaru quarter is missing from the findings, and Japan-built export totals for the quarter were not yet available as of October 2, 2026.

Data note: U.S. sales figures cover Q3 2026, defined as July through September, as reported by October 2, 2026. Complete Q3 2026 export unit figures were not yet available on that date.

Why a Combined Total Is Not Verifiable

Company reports in the brief provide Q3 2026 U.S. totals for four automakers. Toyota Motor North America reported 633,223 vehicles, American Honda reported 392,341 vehicles, Nissan Group reported 226,474 vehicles, and Mazda U.S. sales totaled 108,434 vehicles based on monthly reports. These four totals alone do not establish a combined aggregate across all Japanese automakers.

Mitsubishi information in the brief refers to 19,647 sales for Q3 2025. No comparable Mitsubishi Q3 2026 total is provided in the cited material. Subaru information is also incomplete because an official September 2026 report and a September 2025 comparison were not located. Without those inputs, a combined year over year rate cannot be calculated from the listed sources.

Mazda totals used here are calculated from monthly reports rather than taken from a single quarterly release. The calculation is arithmetic and transparent, with 108,434 vehicles for Q3 2026 and 109,366 vehicles for Q3 2025. Different automakers may define totals, retail sales and reporting periods in different ways, so reporting scope should be confirmed before combining brands.

Until Subaru and Mitsubishi Q3 2026 reports are available on a comparable basis, any combined growth rate remains unverified. Market participants should rely on the individual automaker totals that have been published.

Toyota’s Electrified Sales Outpaced Its Overall Growth

Toyota Motor North America, including Toyota and Lexus, reported 633,223 U.S. vehicle sales in Q3 2026, up 0.6% year over year on a volume basis. The result indicates essentially stable total volume compared with the prior year quarter.

Electrified vehicle sales totaled 363,367 vehicles in the quarter, up 28.5% by volume. Toyota reports these as electrified vehicles, not specifically as hybrids. The electrified total represented 57.4% of total sales volume, which means more than half of quarterly volume came from electrified models.

The divisional breakdown shows that the Toyota division accounted for the majority of both total and electrified volume. The Toyota division reported 540,167 total sales and 325,227 electrified sales. The Lexus division reported 93,056 total sales and 38,140 electrified sales.

The difference between 0.6% total growth and 28.5% electrified growth indicates a shift in sales mix within stable overall volume. The divisional figures show that electrified models accounted for a larger share in the Toyota division than in the Lexus division during the quarter.

Honda’s Record Hybrid Quarter

American Honda sold 392,341 vehicles in the U.S. in Q3 2026, up 9.3% year over year. The increase was larger than the reported total volume changes at Toyota, Nissan and Mazda.

Honda said its hybrid models set a new Q3 record, with over 106,000 hybrid sales. The release does not provide a more precise hybrid sales total in the cited text. The exact hybrid share of the 392,341 total cannot be calculated from the rounded figure.

Honda also reported hybrid shares within two model lines. Hybrids represented 53% of CR-V sales mix and 44% of Accord sales mix in Q3 2026. Those percentages describe the composition of each model line, not the share of total Honda sales.

The CR-V and Accord mix figures provide model level detail on hybrid penetration. The 53% figure applies to CR-V and the 44% figure applies to Accord, which allows comparison between those two model lines in the same quarter.

A Mixed Picture Across the Other Automakers

Nissan Group, including Nissan and INFINITI, reported 226,474 U.S. total vehicle sales in Q3 2026, up 1.4% year over year. The separate retail sales measure was 196,018 vehicles, up 7.8%. The difference between the two measures reflects reporting scope.

The retail growth rate of 7.8% was higher than the total volume growth rate of 1.4% in the same quarter. Both measures cover Nissan Group U.S. sales in Q3 2026 and provide different views of the same period.

Mazda U.S. Q3 sales totaled 108,434 vehicles, calculated from July sales of 39,180, August sales of 34,735, and September sales of 34,519. The Q3 2025 comparison total was 109,366 vehicles, calculated from July sales of 45,057, August sales of 38,140, and September sales of 26,169.

Mazda sales therefore decreased by 932 vehicles, or 0.9%, year over year. The monthly pattern shows lower July and August volumes than the prior year, followed by higher September volume. September 2026 sales of 34,519 exceeded September 2025 sales of 26,169, but the September gain did not fully offset the earlier months.

Mitsubishi information in the brief is limited to 19,647 sales for Q3 2025. No Q3 2026 Mitsubishi total or growth rate is supplied in the findings, so no year over year assessment can be made from the listed sources.

U.S. Sales Are Not the Same as Japan-Built Exports

U.S. sales by Japanese automakers measure vehicles sold in the United States regardless of production location. Japan-built exports measure vehicles shipped from Japan to a destination market. The two series cover different activity and can move in different directions.

JAMA vehicle type by destination export data concerns vehicles exported from Japan. The database does not measure all U.S. sales by Japanese automakers. It is therefore not a substitute for automaker U.S. sales reports when assessing demand in the United States.

Complete Q3 2026 export unit figures were not yet available as of October 2, 2026. Japan Customs scheduled the detailed September 2026 trade statistics release for October 29, 2026. Its calendar also lists October 21 for monthly provisional statistics, not the detailed release. As a result, September and Q3 export detail could not be confirmed at the time of writing.
